The International Council of Marine Industry Associations’ Marine Engine Committee (IMEC) represents the recreational marine engine and personal watercraft manufacturers worldwide. The IMEC is a sub-committee of the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA), which was formed in 1966 and brings together all national boating and other organisations involved in the recreational marine industry into one global organisation to represent them at international level. The main objective of the IMEC is to represent the sector in the formulation of regulations on engine emissions.

The global marine industry, similar to many other industries, is confronted with constant regulatory developments. These changes, which in some cases take the form of new legislation and new technical standards, are in many cases related to the goal of aiming for zero emissions by bringing more “green” into the “blue”. However, this is not the only environment-related development in the marine industry, as the use of chemical substances is also targeted by legislators and therefore plays a crucial role in the policy debate on the future of the marine industry. These discussions regarding new standards for substances can be very complex, which makes it all the more important to be aware of all new developments in order to properly understand them and consequently anticipate them.

In order to provide the most informative and suitable solution to the client, logos has established a monitoring and reporting tool called “Global Scan”.

The aim is to produce a concise report on a monthly basis, looking at regulatory developments in chemical legislation relevant to the marine industry in a commonly defined list of countries. These countries are divided into two categories, a list of four Tier I countries (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA) and seven Tier II countries (Brazil, China, Japan, Malaysia, Russia, the UAE, South Korea). More specifically, logos monitors developments in chemical legislation relevant to applications related to the manufacture of marine engines. This includes chemical legislation for the substances themselves, as well as their impact on substances that occur in a mixture and substances that are used for specific parts of engines and related components.

By informing IMEC about upcoming legislation, explaining in simple terms what lies behind complex texts and outlining the next steps in relation to a particular policy dossier/standard/legislation, logos ensures that IMEC understands and anticipates any obstacles on the horizon.

Through the logos “Global Scan”, ICOMIA, as a representative body, has been able to better serve its 38 members around the world and increase the added value of their membership. In its key regions and countries, ICOMIA has also been able to strengthen its advocacy work by engaging more with the relevant regulatory bodies. Individual ICOMIA members are now better informed to anticipate regulatory changes affecting their industrial and production processes as well as their markets.
